OK, so my public is clamoring for an update. In order to appease both of them, I have acquiesced.
A lot has happened since I last updated my page. The biggest change is that I'm now in Boston. Although I enjoyed California immensely, it did not turn out to be the right place to be. So I sent my stuff on another 3,000 journey.
Once in Boston, I waited a LOOOOONG time for the movers to bring all of my worldly possessions. They also ripped me off on the price. If I ever have to move again, I will definitely research the moving company better. The most frustrating thing was that I couldn't get a driver's license since every bit of my important paperwork was packed. Note to all people thinking of moving... make a file of your really important paperwork, including birth certificate, Social Security card, passport, and other things that I'm just not remembering, and carry it with you when you move. There you go, my unsolicited PSAs about moving.
So there I was, living in the freezing northeast, proper paperwork in hand, and I realized that the next thing I needed was a job. After nearly a year of not really working, but sending out TONS of resumes, I was pretty discouraged. 1,500 resumes sent out in a year. Just thinking of that amount of fruitless searching is exhausting, even now. I spent a while working in a friend's workshop, assembling high-quality leather goods for his business. I found that actually producing a product is very intrinsically satisfying. It was also a wonderful way to get back in the habit of being somewhere on time every day.
A few months later, I decided to try out a temp agency. A wonderful person from my former life in DC, who also happened to have moved to Boston, gave me the name of a contact at pretty good temp agency. I went for an interviews with them and had a temp position inside of two weeks. The job ended up being at this lovely, old Boston bank. It's an interesting company that has roots almost as deep as New England does. It was wonderful to finally be a wage-earning person again. I temped at the same company for 10 months before they finally hired me. Yay for benefits and consistent salary! My two bosses are as different from each other as can be... one is an Olympic medalist (1 silver, 1 bronze) with ivy league pedigrees, the other comes from a much more blue collar type background. They're both totally involved with their kids and wives, which is indescribably inspiring and refreshing to be around every day. They both get it that work is not the most important thing in life. Although every job has frustrations and challenges, in general I'm happy with my work life.
So what's up with my personal life? Well, I live with a terrific partner. We're on the same page about a lot of things philosophically and practically. We have a single family house in a quiet suburban neighborhood. I'm completely spoiled, but try not to take my good fortune for granted. Overall life is good.
Ok, enough rambling for now. Eventually, I'll get back here to make another update.
